Getting Started
How do I sign up?
You can sign up with either email or phone number. Just enter what you have, and we'll send you a verification code (SMS) or magic link (email).
Can I link my email and phone to one account?
Yes. After signing up with one, go to Settings → Account → Link Email/Phone to add the other. Friends can find you by either.
How do I add a friend who doesn't have Dibby yet?
Add them to a group by phone number or email. They'll receive an invite SMS or email. When they sign up, your shared expenses are already there.
Why does Dibby need my phone number / email?
Just for authentication and to let friends find you. We never sell or share it.
Groups & Friends
How many groups can I have?
Unlimited.
Can I have one group with people who use different currencies?
Each group has one currency, picked when the group is created. Everyone in the group sees expenses in that currency. If you and a friend use different currencies, you can:
- Create a group in their currency for that friendship
- Or pick a shared currency at group creation
What's a placeholder friend?
If you want to track expenses with someone who hasn't installed Dibby yet, you can add them as a placeholder. Their name appears in your expenses, and when they sign up, their account auto-merges.
Can I leave a group?
Yes — but you must have a $0 balance first. Settle up, then leave.
Can I delete a group?
The group owner can archive a group. This hides it but preserves history. Permanent deletion is not currently supported (it would erase shared history for other members).
Expenses
What split types are supported?
Four:
- Equal: total / number of people
- Exact amounts: you specify each person's share
- Percentage: each person pays a %
- Shares: divide proportionally (e.g. 2 people = 2 shares, 1 person = 1 share)
Can I save a split as a default?
Yes. After setting up a split, save it as a template. Reuse it on future expenses with one tap.
How does receipt scanning work?
- Tap the camera icon when adding an expense
- Snap a photo of the receipt
- Dibby extracts items and prices
- Review and edit each line
- Assign each item to whoever ordered it
- Save — Dibby calculates each person's share automatically
Why aren't all receipt items extracted accurately?
Receipts vary widely. Our OCR works best on standard restaurant/grocery receipts. Always review before saving — you can edit any line.
Can I delete an expense after creating it?
Yes, you (the creator) or any group admin can delete it. Other members will see the change.
What happens to my expenses if someone deletes their account?
The expenses stay (so the rest of the group's history is intact), but the person's name is replaced with "Former Member".
Settlements
What's a settlement?
When you pay someone back, you record it as a settlement so the balance updates.
Can I settle a partial amount?
Yes. Owe $100 but only paying $40 today? Settle $40, leave $60 outstanding.
Does Dibby actually transfer money?
No. Dibby tracks who owes what. You handle payment via Venmo, PayPal, cash, etc. Mark it as settled in Dibby once paid.
What's "Simplified Debts"?
Dibby figures out the smallest number of payments to settle the entire group. Instead of 12 separate "I owe you / you owe me" transfers, it might say "Pay Alice $30, then everyone's even."
Privacy & Security
What data does Dibby collect?
Only what's needed to run the app: your account info, your groups and expenses, and (only if you opt in) crash reports. Full details in our Privacy Policy.
Is analytics on by default?
No — analytics is OFF by default. We respect privacy, full stop. You can opt in if you want to help us improve the app.
How is my data secured?
- Encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256)
- Phone numbers column-encrypted
- Auth tokens stored in iOS Keychain / Android Keystore
- Receipt photos in private storage with signed URLs
Can I export my data?
Yes. Settings → Account → Export My Data. You'll receive a ZIP with everything in JSON and CSV formats.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Account → Delete Account. Your account is scheduled for deletion in 30 days (you can cancel during that window). After 30 days, your personal info is removed. Your expense history remains for other group members but with your name replaced as "Former Member".
Notifications
Why do I need to allow push notifications?
You don't have to — but it's how you'll know when someone adds an expense, settles up with you, or comments on your group.
Can I customize what I get notified about?
Yes. Settings → Notifications. Toggle each event type independently.
Can I get notifications via email instead?
For account-critical events (security, password reset) — yes. For app activity (expenses, comments) — push only currently.
Multi-currency
Why can't I change my account currency after signup?
You can — Settings → Currency. But existing groups stay in the currency they were created with.
Can a group have multiple currencies?
Each group has one currency, picked at creation. After the first expense, the group currency is locked.
What about exchange rates?
Dibby doesn't do live currency conversion (intentional design choice). Each group is in one currency. Members can see the value in their preferred currency in Settings, but balances stay in the group's currency.
Premium (Future)
Is Dibby free?
Yes — completely free for the first 10,000 users.
What's Dibby Premium?
A future paid tier with extra features (TBD). Currently in development. Beta testers get a free year of Premium when it launches.
How much will Premium cost?
$1.99/month or $20/year (planned).
Troubleshooting
I'm not receiving the SMS verification code
- Check the number is correct (with country code, e.g. +1 for US)
- Wait 60 seconds; SMS can be delayed
- Try again — limit is 5 codes per hour
- Try email signup instead
The receipt scanner isn't working
- Make sure you've granted camera permission (Settings → Permissions → Camera)
- Try better lighting; flat receipt; full receipt in frame
- If extraction is off, just edit the items manually
My data isn't syncing across devices
- Check both devices are signed in to the same account
- Pull-to-refresh in the app
- Check internet connection
- Force-quit and reopen
